Advising for Prospective Students

All undergraduate students must first apply for general admission to the University of Washington.  The Office of Admissions offers campus tours, information sessions, drop-in counseling, advice on course selection and more to help prospective students make informed decisions and introduce you to life on campus.  Once admitted, students should get in touch with an adviser in the School of Art to get on the right track for declaring their major.

Transfer Students

Every Thursday afternoon, starting at 2:30pm, the Undergraduate Gateway Center is open to prospective transfer students for drop-in advising and a group session on transfer admission conducted by a counselor from the Office of Admissions. Transfer students should attend these UW Transfer Thursdays for more information on course planning, timelines etc.

Please note: Photography and Design have special admissions processes that require preparatory action to be eligible as a transfer student. Be sure to consult the program webpage for these and all School of Art majors to ensure your eligiblity. School of Art advisers are available to clarify specific questions and to help you prepare.

Freshmen

Prospective freshmen apply to the UW as "pre-art" majors (selecting any of the art majors on your application with give you this distinction).  No portfolio is required.  Students interested in majoring in the School of Art will complete prerequisite coursework at the UW prior to declaring their major (usually within the first two years of study).

Prospective freshmen are encouraged to attend School of Art Information Sessions as well as general UW information sessions.  The University of Washington offers campus tours, drop-in classes, and information sessions for freshmen.

Postbaccalaureate

Post Baccalaureate is a matriculated status reserved for students who are working toward a second bachelor's degree, or preparing for entrance to graduate or professional school. Only a small number of applicants are admitted as postbaccalaureate students, because the University's primary commitment is to undergraduates completing a first bachelor degree. In keeping with university policy, the School of Art recommends admission of a very limited number of postbaccalaureates each year.

If you are a potential postbaccalaureate student please email the School of Art Advising Office.

Graduate

Prospective graduate students are encouraged to contact the faculty in the program in which they are interested. Many prospective graduate students visit the campus ahead of applying to the UW School of Art. If you are planning a visit, you are strongly encouraged to call ahead.

MFA: The MFA Graduate Program Assistant can assist you with application questions. Questions about curriculum should be addressed to the faculty directly.

MA/PhD: If you have questions regarding application to the MA or PhD programs in Art History, please contact the Art History Graduate Program Assistant.
